Memebox Haul: Bonvivant Mellow Clay Mask Set Review

Hey beauties! A big ol' box of Bonvivant goodies arrived on my doorstep from Memebox some time ago, and I've been itching to tell you all about it! Bonvivant has been making rounds on social media, and they're well loved for their huge assortment of masks. I was lucky enough to be chosen as a Memebox Ambassador recently, and I've been slowly making my way through these goodies, one mask sesh at a time! I received the full Bonvivant Mellow Clay mask set, an assortment of sheet mask from their Botanical Mask Pack line, a heckin' cute bear headband, and some masking accessories. Let's dig in!

I'd been eyeing these Bonvivant Mellow Clay Masks for ages - they'd been making some serious rounds on social media and the FOMO was so, so real. I wanted so badly to paint my face with colorful clay masks, so when Memebox offered to send them over, I jumped at the opportunity.

The Bonvivant Mellow Clay Mask line is a line of next-level jelly clay masks specially crafted to gently calm troubled skin, cleanse pores, hydrate skin, and brighten the complexion. Each variant contains their own star ingredient that has natural benefits to help you fight your skin problems. An innovative jelly-like clay that is 50% more hydrating than the traditional clay mask, it draws out dirt and impurities, removes blackheads, and provides skin with a hefty dose of hydration.

Bonvivant Mellow Clay Mask Hawaiian Pink Calamine ($14 for 70g) - Calamine is probably my skin's best friend. As someone who's skin is reactive and prone to redness (anyone team #rosacea out here?), the soothing, antiseptic qualities of calamine are a godsend when my skin starts acting up. While I don't necessarily have full blown rosacea, I'm vampirically pale and I'm not very thick-skinned, so all of my blood vessels are easily visible through the surface of my skin, and love to make a dramatic appearance when I experience temperature fluctuations (especially heat), stress, anxiety, and even when I'm drinking alcohol or exercising (well, especially when I'm drinking and exercising). While it may not be a life threatening condition, it's pretty frickin' frustrating and I try to do everything I can to minimize flareups. Bonvivant uses 10,000ppm of calamine in this mask, and 1,000ppm of kaolin clay (which averages out to about 30% or so of the mask). Kaolin clay is one of my favorite ingredients because it helps draw impurities to the surface without drying out the skin like traditional clay masks.

Description: The pink calamine mask calms and relieves red, dry, and flaky skin, thanks to its star ingredient calamine that treats even sunburns and rashes. This calming mask also hydrates while detoxifying skin, so you're left with clean, moisturized, and supple skin.

Ingredients:
Water, Kaolin, Glycerin, PEG/PPG-17/6 Copolymer, Calamine, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Betula Platyphylla Japonica Juice, Papain, Maltodextrin, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Castanea Crenata (Chestnut) Shell Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Volcanic Ash, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Cellulose Gum, Hydroxyacetophenone, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Betaine, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Caprylyl Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Chlorphenesin, Caprylyl Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol.

Review: I love the firm, bouncy texture of this mask! It relatively unscented as far as I can tell, and it applies smoothly (although working with the texture does take some getting use to, I've had globs of it fall to the floor with an embarrassing plop more times than I'd like to admit). It doesn't quite dry down, although it does tighten a bit and cause that itchy feeling that's usually associated with clay masks. I rinse off these masks using the sponge they included, and this one was much easier to remove than the other two. My skin feels a lot smoother/softer afterwards, and looks a bit brighter after every use! Many people use calamine to help brighten skin tone and fade hyperpigmentation (due to the zinc oxide it contains), and with regular use, this mask does help a bit with brightening and evening my skin.

Bonvivant Mellow Clay Mask Jeju Volcanic ($14 for 70g) - This traditional volcanic ash and clay mask contains 1000ppm of volcanic ash, and is 35% charcoal and kaolin clay. Charcoal has a ton of good-for-your-skin benefits whose praises cannot be sung loudly enough. A lifesaver for those with oily skin and overactive sebaceous glands, activated charcoal has been known to minimize the appearance of pores and eliminate blackheads. Dirt/sweat binds to the activated charcoal on a cellular level, and the charcoal pulls the impurities to the surface of the skin to make washing it away much, much easier. It also does the same with oil, which is very helpful for those looking for a remedy for oily skin. It also contains Lavendula Augustifolia (Lavender) Extract, which has amazing wound healing properties thanks to being antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial. This mask is still jelly-like in texture, although it's not as firm as the chamomile mask, and works to remove dirt and oil that is deep down in pores and push those impurities to the surface.

Description: The Jeju volcanic mask stars exotic ingredients from Jeju volcanoes to dig out deep-seated dirt, debris, and oil from pores. It also controls excess sebum production, leaving you with clear, radiant, and naturally dewy skin. Plus, it's the mildest of the three in this line, so it's perfect for sensitive and blackhead-prone skin.

Ingredients:
Water, Kaolin, Glycerin, PEG/PPG-17/6 Copolymer, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Charcoal Powder, Betula Platyphylla Japonica Juice, Papain, Maltodextrin, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Castanea Crenata (Chestnut) Shell Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Volcanic Ash, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Cellulose Gum, Hydroxyacetophenone, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Hydroxyethylcellulose, Betaine,Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Caprylyl Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, CI 77499, Caprylyl Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol.

Review: The Jeju volcanic clay mask is not quite as bouncy as the calamine one, but it still has a lot of springiness to it. It's a bit thinner in texture, but applies smoothly and easily and is also unscented. This mask is probably the most gentle of the three - it barely dries down at all, and doesn't tug or make my skin itchy, which makes it my favorite of the three! It does take a bit of work to remove though, so a sponge or warm washcloth will definitely come in handy. It works well to bring some blackheads/clogs (usually along my chin and the sides of my nose) to the surface, but doesn't stand a chance against the sebaceous filaments on my nose sigh. I can't really take away points for that though, since pretty much nothing can conquer those, so overall, I'd have to say that this mask did a pretty awesome job at drawing impurities to the surface and making my pores look cleaner/smaller. As far as clay masks go, I'd have to say this one is nicer than many that I've tried!

Bonvivant Mellow Clay Mask Mint Tea Tree ($14 for 70g) - I was really excited to try this mask out specifically, because my skin loves tea tree! This mask contains .01ppm of tea tree oil and .08% mint extract - perfect for oily, blemish-prone skin! It also contains walnut shell powder (1%), which is what gives this mask its lightly exfoliating properties. The interesting thing about this mask is that it's main ingredient is montmorillonite (1000ppm), which is a mix of bentonite and fuller's earth, an ingredient that's often used in skincare to soak up oils and can help reduce hyperpigmentation and scar marks. Hell yes. This mask has a much more liquid-y consistency compared to the other two masks in this line, and you can see the bits of walnut powder added for texture and exfoliation.

Description: The Mint Tea Tree mask treats troubled and oily skin, removing dead skin cells and absorbing excess sebum with its tea tree oil. It also tightens enlarged pores and cools skin with a refreshing sensation, leaving you shining radiantly in a non-greasy way.

Ingredients:
Water, Kaolin, Glycerin, PEG/PPG-17/6 Copolymer, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Juglans Regia (Walnut) Shell Powder, Betula Platyphylla Japonica Juice, Papain, Maltodextrin, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Castanea Crenata (Chestnut) Shell Extract, Mentha Arvensis Powder, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Montmorillonite, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Cellulose Gum, Hydroxyacetophenone, Chromium Oxide Greens, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Betaine, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Caprylyl Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, CI 77492, CI 77499, Fragrance.

Review: This is the last mask in the trio and the one I was most excited about slathering on my face. Mint and tea tree feel so cool and soothing on inflamed, irritated skin, and tea tree works wonders for balancing oil production and preventing new acne/blemishes from cropping up uninvited (when are blemishes ever invited, though?). This mask is a bit tricky to apply without dripping it all over, but once it's on, it stays put. It dries down more than the Jeju volcanic, but not as much as the calamine mask, making it pleasant to wear and easy to remove. The little bits of walnut shell offer a bit of gentle physical exfoliation on the days when I need it, and the mask washes away easily, leaving behind soothed, refreshed skin and less visible pores. My skin also doesn't feel dry or stripped while using this, but gently hydrated and smooth. Love!

To use: The instructions for these masks are all the same; simply apply an even layer onto targeted areas of the face, leave on for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse off. I love Memebox's suggested manner of use, which is Rainbow Masking.

Memetip: Ready to change the way you mask? We all have different skincare needs on each part of our faces. For instance, our t-zone is oilier than our cheeks, our chin area is more prone to breakouts, and so on. Cue in Rainbow Masking! This cool K-beauty concept encourages us to take control by tailoring our masking to suit our specific skincare needs.

I totally decided to try out Rainbow Masking, because it looked like so much fun. I like to apply these masks a little differently from how it is demo'ed in the above photo; the pink calamine works wonders to help calm and soothe my dry, redness-prone cheeks, the Jeju volcanic is great for sebum control and clogged pores, so I applied it liberally to my nose area and chin, and the mint tea tree is great for gentle exfoliation and pore control, so I applied it to the areas where my pores are the largest/most noticeable, namely my forehead, the areas around my nose, and my upper lip area. The masks are lovely to use each on their own, but I find that this method of targeting specific trouble areas to be especially effective in keeping my skin balanced, healthy, and happy.

Final Thoughts: Overall, using these clay masks was one heck of an experience! As someone with combination skin, I've always loved the idea of targeting different areas of my skin based on specific needs, and I do it often in my own skincare routine, so I love that I can now apply the same concept to clay masking. I often find that while certain clay masks work wonders for my t-zone, they often dry out my cheek (and vice versa), so I love that I can target each area of my face individually with Rainbow Masking to give my skin exactly what it needs, where it needs it. These masks are definitely something I'll be repurchasing in the future, especially the ever-soothing chamomile mask to combat the redness in my cheeks, and the mint tea tree mask to tackle my forehead, nose, and chin. Although I was gifted these, I would still totally recommend them if you're feeling bored with your current clay mask and want to try something a little different and fun.
