Ipsy Glam Bag January 2017 Review

Another Ipsy Glam Bag arrived on my doorstep last month, and it was a good one! I'm actually glad that I resubscribed to Ipsy; the samples sent have gotten so much better! Let's have a look inside:

Ipsy is a $10 a month makeup and beauty subscription. Subscribers receive a Glam bag filled with deluxe samples and full sized beauty products. Each bag usually brings 4-6 products from top cosmetic brands, and they can be anything from makeup to skincare to nail polish...you name it! When you first sign up, you'll take a beauty quiz that helps Ipsy determine your preferences, and from there they'll send you products that they think you'll enjoy. There are a lot of variations in what is sent out, so you may see other subscribers get totally different products from you! After you receive your glam bag and get to trying everything out, don't forget to review the samples you receive! That way if you don't like something, you can let Ipsy know so they can avoid sending you what you don't want to receive.

This month had a theme of "Metropolis": Coffee? Check. Lip gloss? Check. Taxi fare? Check. Here, everything you need to own the concrete jungle.

Ciate London Gelology Top Coat - Can we talk about this top coat for a second? I am obsessed with Ciate London (both their makeup and polishes), and this pretty silver bottle only cements my love for them. While I don't really need another top coat (I have too many as it is), I'll definitely be storing this for later use. It would also make a great gift, but I'm greedy and want it all to myself. Mine.

Description: Yah, gel manis are fab, but the removal process can be a total pain (does anyone have time for a soak off, really?). Paint on this top coat and you'll get the same salon-worthy shine, long-lasting wear, and that plump and full look that you just can't get from plain polish. Once a nail technician, founder Charlotte Knight is now a global beauty brand owner, proving that following your passion is always the right move. #GirlBoss

SLMissGlam Blend Beauty Brush L34 - I'll never complain about getting free brushes in beauty subscriptions. Unless they suck. This one, however, is perfectly adorable, lavender, and jewel encrusted, so I'm already sold on the packaging. The bristles are soft and blend easily, making this a great brush to have around, even if I don't have the whole set (which costs $325, sob).

Description: No boring brushes here! Of course we totally love the purple handle (side note: it's not only pretty, but much easier to find in an overcrowded makeup bag). The ombre bristles are made of a super soft synthetic material, and the shape is ideal for applying color just in the crease, or all over your lid. Started by a makeup artist and beauty blogger who thought that makeup brushes were always black and boring (we have to agree), this brand offers ones that are pastel, jeweled, and oh-s-glam...but, most importantly, still perform.

Pur~lisse Blue Lotus Seed 5-in-1 Mud Mask + Exfoliant - Pur~lisse is a brand that I have wanted to try for ages (I've been specifically eyeing this mask in particular), so I was so happy to find a sample in my bag this month. This mask is a mixture of kaolin and bentonite clays, and promises to brighten, soothe, and firm up skin while providing gentle exfoliation. I haven't cracked this one open yet, but I'll definitely be reviewing it (probably on my Instagram) when I do!

Description: As a rule, mud masks can be, well, messy, but this one makes you feel more like you're at the spa than running a tough mudder. It also does about 10 million amazing things for your complexion (we're talking brighten, detoxify. tighten, and soothe, all while gently exfoliating), thanks to a power combo of ingredients including blue lotus seeds, bamboo, white clay, ginger, and mushroom.

Star Crushed Minerals Metallic Shadow in Aged to Perfection Champagne - I'm slowly trying to grow my meager eye shadow collection, so I was excited to receive another one, especially one that I could wear to both work and the club. Just kidding, I hate clubbing, but I love the versatility this little eye shadow pot has to offer! It's very, very sparkly, but I love sparkly so this is perfectly fine with me. I'm not feeling Ipsy's description of this shadow though - free of "chemicals"? Everything has chemicals, so unless SCM somehow managed to harness pure energy, I'm pretty sure there's some chemicals in there. For shame, Ipsy writers.

Description: Finely milled (by hand, at that) pigments give this powder a crazy velvety texture. The neutral metallic hue is subdued enough for everyday, but works just as well for evening, and doubles as liner too for a glimmery eye look that we just can't get enough of. Founders, and husband and wife, Edie and David were working on making jewelry out of stainless steel and concrete (for reals) when Edie realized they could use their unique perspective on beauty and color to create makeup that would fill her need for non-irritating products. And so SCM was born, a line free of parabens, talc, chemicals, and preservatives, but with an amazing range of bold pigments.

TEMPTU Base Smooth & Matte Primer - I'm always in the market for a new primer, so I was excited to try one that claims to keep my face matte and my pores looking smaller all day. I've used this product a few times already, and so far it does seem to keep my makeup in place and prevent the oilies from attacking. We'll see how it holds up in summer when it my sebum production is in overdrive.

Description: We can admittedly get a little Goldilocks-esque when it comes to primer - finding them either too heavy or too greasy. But this one is just right, leaving our skin feeling silky smooth - without any residue - and definitely upping the staying power of our makeup. One swipe also tamps down shine and totally minimizes the look of any prominent pores. They're no new kid on the block. TEMPTU first launched in 1981, then came out with that oh-so-popular airbrush system in 1996, constantly killing it decade after decade, thanks to the flawless finish that all of their products deliver.

Final Thoughts: Another great month of Ipsy! I've been so impressed with the quality and variety of samples they've been sending out lately. I actually look forward to my Ipsy bags now, where before they were pretty unexciting as a whole (which is why I canceled in the first place). I'll be using every sample I received, and there isn't any sample in particular that I wasn't excited to open up and try. When it comes to subscription services, it's hard to please everyone, but I have to say, Ipsy has been doing a bang up job curating these bags. If you'd like to start receiving your very own glam bags (and why wouldn't you?), you can sign up here. At only $10/month, it's definitely worth it to try something new!
