Quickie Review: Jan Marini Hyla 3D HA Activating Complex

As many of you know, I've been a Brandbacker reviewer for a bit now, and I was recently sent the new Hyla 3D HA Activating Complex from the company Jan Marini. While I haven't had a ton of time to extensively test this out, I thought I'd do a quickie review and talk a little bit about the product and my first impressions of it.

A little bit about Brandbacker, because I really think you all should know - Brandbacker is an influencer platform that helps bloggers and those who have a reach on social media connect with brands. Much like Influenster or 08liter, Brandbacker has active campaigns for awesome brands (the campaigns I've recently been accepted to participate in are for Hask, Finesse, Neostrata, and D'OR24K). All you have to do on your part is connect your social media on Brandbacker (if you browse my blog, you'll see the Brandbacker logo under my affiliates section), and apply for the campaigns. If chosen, you'll receive an email stating that you're in (yay!), and then the brand will ship out your samples, and in turn you'll have to submit a blog and/or social media review. Most campaigns send out full-sized samples, but some offer monetary compensation, although I haven't been chosen or any of those (I believe there was a paid campaign offered by Derma E some time ago!). Basically, it's just another way for brands to get the word out about their products, and you get free swag and a chance to earn a little extra "beer money". Sounds great, right?

A bit about Hyla3D:
Age and sun damage diminish the body's ability to produce and maintain youthful levels of hyaluronic acid (HA) in the skin, leading to loss of volume and visible signs of aging. Hyla3D takes a three-dimensional approach to restore HA and volume in the skin.

  • Multiple forms of HA apply deep, long-lasting hydration.
  • Advanced technologies enhance HA within the skin.
  • Peptides and antioxidants boost collagen and elastin.

Hyla3D restores hydration while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a more youthful, contoured look.

Sounds pretty serious, doesn't it? While I'm still young (just turned 24, in fact!) and I'm not super worried about wrinkles/fine lines, I do have a few around my eyes and mouth, so I've been looking into anti-aging products as a preventative measure. This product in particular seemed promising, and contains some interesting ingredients, including:

  • Liposomal Encapsulated HA
  • Cross-linked HA
  • Ultra-low molecular weight HA
  • Traditional HA
  • Tissue Respiratory Factor
  • HA Booster
  • HA Peptide
  • Coenzyme Q10

The serum claims to be suitable for most skin types, including normal, dry, oily, acne-prone, and sensitive skin types.

Ingredients:
Water/Aqua/Eau, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Acrylates C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer, Saccharomyces Lysate Extract, Oligopeptide-24, Ubiquinone, Calcium Ketogluconate, Peucedanum Graveolens (Dill) Extract, Panthenol, Lecithen, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Tocopherol, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Xanthan Gum, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Phosphate, Pentylene Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Caprylyl Glycol, Sodium Oleate, Citric Acid, Isoceteth-10, Silica, Lactobacillus Ferment, Alcohol, Hexylene Glycol, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol.

As far as the ingredients go, I'm a bit disappointed in the fact that the first three ingredients are water, glycerin, and butylene glycol; while these are good humectant/conditioning agents, these can be found in the cheapest serum you can find in pretty much any drugstore. Since the Hyla3D serum is $125 a pop, I expected much better base ingredients. However, there are a few great ingredients hidden in here, such as multiple forms of hyaluronic acid and lactobacillus ferment, both of which add moisture, nourishment, and hydration to the skin, keeping it smooth, supple, and healthy looking. There's also oligopeptide-24, which is known for its Botox-like anti-wrinkle/anti-aging benefits.

My favorite part of this product is its consistency - it's a viscous gel-like serum with a beautiful gold color, and sinks in effortlessly, meaning it doesn't interfere with any other steps of my skincare/makeup routine. It also doesn't clog pores or irritate the skin, which is important for me considering I about burnt my face off a week or so ago with retinoid (#overexfoliationlife).

Final Thoughts: Unfortunately, when it comes to anti-aging products, 2-3 weeks just isn't enough to test their benefits/really see results, so I can only go by my experiences after using it over the course of 3 weeks. While I didn't see any major improvements, I did notice some of the fine lines around my eyes and nose lessen a lot in appearance (I would have loved to see the deeper lines around my mouth go, but no such luck). I'd love to see what this serum can do with months of daily use, but nothing miraculous has happened yet, unfortunately, and it just feels like an extra step in an already lengthy routine.

While I do think this serum has promise, I think something like this will need to be used for a month or longer to actually see noticeable results. Since the serum only comes in a 30ml bottle (making it a little over $4 an ounce - ouch!) I don't know if it'd be worth it for me at this point in my life to repurchase this, even if it did show some crazy results (like in this photo here). My skin is still young and fairly elastic, so I won't be repurchasing this, but if you have more mature skin than myself (and a larger budget, ha!) and are looking to bring out the big anti-wrinkle guns, this might be a solid choice. I definitely look forward to an update when I'm finished with the bottle, to see if it really does reverse/prevent signs of aging.
